Redepenning

List the activities you have participated in and tell of your proudest accomplishments. I have participated in cross-country running, Nordic skiing, track, National Honor Society, and I have played the piano for 12 years. My proudest accomplishments are receiving All-Conference honorable mention in skiing my freshman year and winning the MMTA state piano contest the last three years.
What is your favorite class and why? What is your favorite subject? My favorite class this year is pre-AP English because we get to work on projects and essays that are relevant and important to us. My favorite subject is math because I like having a clear process to get straight-forward answers.
What are your future plans? I am planning on attending college after I graduate, but I am undecided as to where I will go and what I will study.
What are your hobbies and/or personal interests? I like to bike, ski and play the piano.
Who is your hero, if you have one, and why? My hero is my ski coach Kirsten Anderson because she works very hard at both teaching and coaching. She is always there for her athletes and students and is always showing that she cares about us. She has made a big impact in my life.
Tell of a most memorable experience that relates to school, personal interests or a hobby. One memorable experience from Nordic skiing was last year when the team went to Grand Marais over Christmas break. We eventually ended up staying in a school because the location was changed at the last minute! We had so much fun and the whole team became a lot closer.
How do you demonstrate leadership? I lead by example. I work hard and include people, hoping others will follow and do the same.
How do you approach academics to achieve success? I always stay on top of my homework and make sure I am understanding the material to avoid cramming the night before a test. I always ask for help when I need it.
What special projects have you done, in or out of school? I volunteer a lot with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in their walk, ride and advocacy programs as well as other JDRF events, including raising over $800 by doing the Shiver Elk River.
Why do you think you won this award? I think I won this award because I have worked hard and stood out as a leader this year.
What does it mean to you? This award means a lot to me because it shows that the effort I have put into school, sports, piano, volunteering, and being a leader is being noticed. I feel very honored to be chosen for this award.

Mainstreams: Artists to be formerly known as District 728 students

The fine artists whose work will be on display in the new District 728 Office come fall have been chosen.
They were recognized with certificates and their first public showing of their work at the May 8 Elk River Area School Board meeting. The winning artists had their picture taken with their teacher and the superintendent of schools.
Interim Superintendent Bruce Watkins sent a thank-you note to art teachers following their presentation.
“I have admired and bragged many times about beautiful and creative student artwork on display in the district office,” Watkins said in an email to the teachers. “Many visitors to the D.O. also make comments and are so impressed with the students’ talent.”
Watkins also noted it was particularly fun to meet the young artists who will have their creations on exhibit in the new district office in the former Minnesota School of Business facility.
“Although I believe some portion of their artistic ability may be a natural born ability, I believe far more of it comes from the nurturing environment that you have created, which allows an individual’s raw expression of art to be refined and cultivated to a point of universal appreciation,” he said. “You have a gift. Thanks for sharing that gift with the students of ISD 728.”
Every year, since 2012, two students from every school in the district have been selected for their exemplary artwork. Their work is photographed and images are printed on a foam core and framed to hang in the district office for an entire school year.
Leah Schultz, a K-5 art teacher at Twin Lakes Elementary School, created a slideshow and printed out the certificates to be handed out at a board meeting. Damien Husen at Elk River High School created the posters. Rana Nestrud also added these images onto a card so that each of the School Board members would have a set of greeting cards with the student artwork on it.
“This recognition allows these students to identify themselves as an artist for the rest of their lives,” Schultz said. “I can’t tell you how many past students who have been recognized have continued their path in art.”
Parents often share that students’ interest in art increases after this night of recognition.
“I am so thankful that our district takes the time to acknowledge the many artistic talents in our district,” Schultz said. “When students experience an art curriculum kindergarten through 12th grade, those experiences build on each other and is the reason why we have such amazing art at each level.”
To see all 34 images that will be on display, visit www.erstarnews.com and click on District 728 artists.

Board acts to protect boundary line moves

Contributing Writer
The Elk River Area School Board voted 6-0 Monday night, with School Board Director Holly Thompson absent, to close open enrollment for the coming school year in five of the district’s 17 schools.

According to district officials, the move will protect — as much as possible — the integrity of boundary lines changes that were made across the district to accommodate the new Prairie View Elementary and Middle School this fall and the fastest growth areas in the district.

The change will close five schools to non-resident students in the 2017-18 school year.

It will close for kindergarten through fifth-grade students at Twin Lakes and Parker elementary schools and kindergarten through sixth-grade students at the new Prairie View Elementary and Middle School.

Grades six through eight at Salk and Rogers middle schools are also closed.

Joe Stangler, director of research and assessment for the district, said that even with the open enrollment closures, Rogers Middle School is still projected to be 11 percent over capacity next year.

The district has removed a portion of incoming sixth-graders, who will be attending Prairie View Elementary school, but Rogers Middle School attendance will still be close to 1,100 students next year, he said.

Salk Middle School is usually closed after the magnet program lottery is done, so it will also be closed to open enrollment.

Parker and Twin Lakes elementary schools are not at capacity, but given the changes in boundary lines, Stangler asked they will be closed anyway.

He said parents had an opportunity to request to stay at that school, and the district honored those requests, but since they kept coming in, he felt it appropriate to close open enrollment there.

“They are near or above what we projected their enrollment to be for next fall,” Stangler told the board.

He told the board it should close open enrollment at Prairie View because students would be there for three years with none of them leaving this year or next. If enrollment projections hold, Prairie View will not see any overcrowding this coming year but will be over capacity in 2018-19.

He said the committee wants to be proactive until additional provisions can be made.

Stangler said the committee will also be monitoring enrollment between now and the start of school and if at any point in time it feels the district can open a building or a grade level, it will come back to the board and make that request.

Director Gregg Peppin asked Stangler for an open-enrollment comparison with the current year. Stangler said it’s about the same, but that the district is keeping more resident students. Stangler estimated open enrollment at 6.8 percent — about 800 students — for next year.

Ivan Sand turned magical forest

Ivan Sand Community High School prom-goers enjoyed a catered meal from Zimmerman Bar and Grill in their gym decorated to look like an magical forest.

The dinner and dance were held in a decorated gym at Ivan Sand Community High School.

This year’s theme, “Enchanted Forest,” was the vision of (soon to be retired) English teacher Cheryl Netka.
“Staff members worked hard to make this elaborate and very heartfelt vision a reality for the 62 students and guests in attendance,” a press release stated.

The gym was transformed into a “magical forest,” complete with an 18-foot tree constructed by school social worker Joe Robinson, the release stated.

Thanks to donors and volunteers many students were provided dresses, haircuts, up-dos and professional photography.

Thanks to donors and volunteers, the school was able to provide students with dresses, haircuts, up-dos, professional photography, an Italian meal catered by Zimmerman Bar and Grill and a DJ who kept students (and teachers) dancing all night.

“For the students at Ivan Sand, this was an opportunity to participate in a classic high school tradition, and it certainly was a night they will cherish all their lives,” the release stated.

Mainstreams: Rivals come together, pay tribute at Pearl Harbor

Though rivals in competition, Elk River and Zimmerman band members eagerly put their hearts together and beat a patriotic tune.

Ninety-nine members of the high schools’ bands spent spring break touring Hawaii and performed at Pearl Harbor during a Remember the Heroes concert before a wreath-laying ceremony and flag and trophy presentation at the museum there.

Set up on the U.S. naval base, the nearly 100-piece band looked directly out onto the USS Arizona Memorial and performed before a crowd that included dozens of military men and women.

Elk River band director John Rosner said all the students were “incredibly moved by the experience.”

Elk River and Zimmerman band members perform at the U.S. naval base overlooking the USS Arizona memorial at Pearl Harbor.

“It’s one thing to read about the attack on Pearl Harbor, to hear stories, but this makes it very real. You’re right there where it happened. It’s pretty powerful,” he said.

Zimmerman band director Tim Smith agreed.

“This performance is a way for us to give back to those who have done so much to protect us,” Smith said. “In this small way we can leave behind the greatest gift we have to offer, which is our music.”

In addition to performing a collection of traditional and popular patriotic pieces, band members hit a high note in their Hawaiian hosts’ hearts when they played “‘A ‘Ole Pilikia,” an original piece composed by Smith and featuring ukuleles and a conch shell.

The title of the piece describes a relaxed, carefree mood and includes hula music and a turn to a dark melody invoking the spirituality of the Polynesian people before climaxing with the traditional anthem “Aloha ‘Oe,” the state song of Hawaii.

“Our Hawaiian hosts told me they all broke out in ‘goose pimples all over’ when we surprised them with that song as the finale to the piece,” Smith said.

As for Elk River and Zimmerman band members, their hearts were especially moved when, after their Remember the Heroes performance, they watched a film about Pearl Harbor and then toured the USS Arizona.

“It was a very emotional and enlightening experience for me,” said freshman trombone player Meghan Bentz. “I found the museum very interesting and visiting the (USS Arizona) memorial was very intense.”

At the memorial not a sound was heard when, in a sympathetic remembrance of those lost in the Pearl Harbor attack, band members released the flowers from their leis into the sea and watched them wash over the sunken battleship.

“It was pretty intense,” trombonist Chelsea Bonk said. “You think about the 1,177 men killed there that day (on the USS Arizona), you scatter your flowers over the sunken ship and you see drops of oil — they call them ‘black tears’ — floating to the surface. It really affects you.”

Later that evening, band members performed a selection of patriotic and popular tunes once again, this time before an international audience at the Ala Moana Center, the country’s largest open-air shopping mall.

Of course, in addition to their visit to Pearl Harbor, band members’ week at the islands included some iconic Hawaiian experiences. They spent an afternoon at the beach paddle boarding, swimming and snorkeling, toured the Koolau Mountains, learned the Hukilu hula, enjoyed traditional island dishes, hiked to the summit of Diamond Head Crater and more.

“This was just an incredible trip. Trip of a lifetime,” Bonk said.

It has become tradition for Rosner to take band students on one “big trip” every four years. Previous tours have had the band performing in Germany, Austria, Italy, New York, New Orleans, Chicago, Ireland and beyond.

“It’s good to be exposed to different cultures, to hear the world’s music and to learn of customs practiced for hundreds of years. We’ve had some very valuable, once-in-a-lifetime trips,” Rosner said.

Outgoing director advises Spectrum grads to ‘choose well’

Spectrum High School graduates collected their diplomas and tossed their mortarboards into the air Friday, May 26, during commencement at the public charter school in Elk River.
The Class of 2017 consisted of 62 members.
The ceremony included student and faculty speeches, music, the presentation of the flag by the Elk River Police Department Honor Guard, the reading of a poem about the class, a senior video, awards and more.

Valedictorian Kayla Averbeck encouraged her classmates to look to the future with hope.

Valedictorian Kayla Averbeck said graduates are facing the closure of an influential time in their lives, and will miss their friends and teachers. As they go off to start new beginnings, the future can look frightening and unfamiliar, she said.
But she encouraged graduates to look to the future with hope. There is the hope of growing as a person through new experiences and places, the hope of gaining more wisdom, meeting new people and achieving dreams, and the hope of making a difference, she said.
“Never forget to dream beyond what you think your potential is, never underestimate the effect of hard work, and approach every new opportunity with a little bit of optimism,” she said.
Salutatorian Olivia Rice said the challenges already presented to graduates have been an opportunity to become more intelligent and develop skills of diligence, responsibility, determination and integrity.
“We have our whole lives ahead of us to continue to grow in our character and, more importantly, to transform the world around us,” she said. “We know that this is possible because we have already put in the hours and hours of work to stand here to graduate today. We did it.”
Spectrum’s outgoing executive director, Vanessta Spark, who is retiring, gave the commencement address. She talked about three things she wishes she would have known during her graduation that she knows now. She called them her “A, B, C Book.”

Vanessta Spark, outgoing executive director of Spectrum, told graduates about three things she wished she knew as a graduating senior.

Chapter A is to act on your authenticity.
“Authenticity means to be genuine,” she said.
Spark said she grew up with a rather negative view of herself and didn’t think she had any natural talents or gifts. Then, in college, she learned about being self-aware and listening to her instincts. That began her journey to identify her beliefs and values.
“Of course, I also found out it is not always easy to face fears and doubts, but the reward is we find out what makes our heart sing and our spirit soar,” she said.
Chapter B is to be the best version of yourself.
“We become successful over time from all the positive steps that we take each and every day,” Spark said.
She also encouraged students to learn from their failures and “fail forward.” After a failure, get back up, make a little more progress and keep failing forward, she said.
Chapter C is to choose positive connections.
Healthy relationships are one of the most important things in life, she said.
“It is really valuable to surround yourself with friends and family who share your inner values, who embrace your uniqueness, and who inspire you to reach further in life,” she said.
In closing, Spark said she has had a wonderful co-author that never gave up on her.
“That co-author was my heavenly father,” she told the graduates. She cited the Bible verse Jeremiah 29:11 – “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”
Spark told the graduates that now is their time to be the author of their own “A, B, C Book.”
“Choose well,” she advised.

Dan DeBruyn is the incoming executive director of Spectrum.

Spirit Awards were given to graduates Travis Bondy, Zachary Clark, Clay Jackson, Davey Jackson and Alisa Johnson.
Outstanding student scholars were also recognized. They are Travis Bondy, Kelton Sundstrom, Peyton Foster, Leo Grotte, Lydia Nesser, Zoe Suiter, Kayla Averbeck, Lorna Bechtel, Holly Johnson, Brenna Waterhouse, Elijah Ehr, Zachary Clark, Kyla Galligher, Sidney Henry, Aidan Riley, Joel Zimmerman, Chlotielde Bechtel, Sarah Harvell and D’Lorah Roberts.
Lisa Lorensen was honored with the Volunteer Recognition Award.
David Lucas, chairman of the school’s board of directors, along with Spark and Principal Joshua Anderson conferred the diplomas.
In closing remarks, teacher Amy Kinney recited a poem she wrote for the class titled, “Class of 2017: A Rhapsody,” which concluded:
“So let the roof blow off this school
“For graduates so smart, so cool,
“Your precious hearts inspired this day,
“We love you! Now be on your way!”

Student scores a perfect 36 on ACT

A Spectrum High School student has achieved a perfect score of 36 on the ACT test, which is a college entrance exam.

Chlotielde Bechtel said she was surprised when she learned of the results. She had hoped to score a 35, which would ensure that she got a very good scholarship.

Bechtel, 17, graduated May 26 from Spectrum High School in Elk River and plans to attend Liberty University in Virginia to study biomedical sciences. Her plan is to become a doctor.

“I really like helping people,” she said.

Bechtel, of Elk River, is the daughter of Mark and Julie Bechtel. Her dad is a doctor in Princeton.
Bechtel has been attending Spectrum since the seventh grade.

For the past two years, she has been enrolled in college-level courses full-time as a Postsecondary Enrollment Options student, earning college credits while attending Anoka-Ramsey Community College and then Bethel University. She has earned 81 college credits, which has put her into her junior year of college.

She also is a three-sport athlete, participating in swimming, basketball and track.

Bechtel achieved the perfect ACT score on her second try. The first time she took the test, she scored 33. Bechtel said she didn’t study for the test the first time, but did for the second attempt.

Asked if she had any advice for others taking the big test, Bechtel said to not stress out.

“Just calm down a little bit, take a breath and then do your best and it will be good,” she said.

Students delve into science questions

Interested in the history of sneezing? How about which color hair produces the most static electricity? Here’s one: Which dog treats are truly most favored by canines?

The research into these and other intriguing questions were shared at Otsego Elementary School’s premiere Science Fair Exhibition recently. The fifth-graders, families and community members met in a crowded gymnasium surrounded by display boards, gadgets and the sights, sounds and smells of a science workshop.

Lauren Willenbring used microscopes to reveal the distinctly different crystals in the sand.

This fair was inspired by Otsego Elementary science teacher Zoeann Allen and supported by the multidisciplinary efforts of the school’s fifth-grade teaching team. The goal was for the students to experience the rigors of the scientific method from beginning to end. Students were given their research topics but had to narrow down their purpose and identify a specific research question. During their months of study, they conducted background research, created their hypotheses and procedures, conducted experiments, analyzed their data and eventually presented their conclusions.
While meeting their Minnesota state requirements for fifth-grade science, math and language arts, these students were getting first-hand research experience of their own.

“It’s been a blast and a huge learning experience for all involved,” Allen said.

Some experiments produced surprising results. According to Emily Carroll, “The hot water actually froze first,” and that was a result of a chemical reaction. And Keira Hutchins confirmed that the color of a candle actually does affect how quickly it burns.

Lauren Willenbring used a microscope to correlate the presence of certain minerals in the samples of different colored sand. Specifically, the presence of mica, quartz and feldspar gave her sand samples a distinctly different sheen and color.

And other research was meticulously conducted and displayed. The rates of absorption, amounts of sediment, and the effect of temperature all influenced Yusupha Saine’s results when he studied the effects of moisture on the color of different types of soil.

About 140 students in all participated in scientific exploration.

Six years ago, Lynk Downing spoke at his high school graduation in Zimmerman.
Wednesday night, he was back at ZHS again, this time as a recent teacher at the school who was chosen by the Class of 2017 to be one of the commencement speakers.

“I became a teacher with the goal to make an impact on students’ lives, and I can’t put into words how happy I am that I may have done just that,” Downing told the class.
Downing, two graduating seniors and several school officials addressed the Class of 2017 during the ceremony.

Student speaker Mikayla Sonterre titled her speech “Memories.”

Student speaker Mikayla Sonterre urged her classmates to hold close their wonderful school memories and put them to good use.
She suggested using those memories to keep connections between friends stronger than ever, and to remind yourself that you can do anything you set your mind to achieve.
“As we walk out those doors, officially graduated from Zimmerman High School, remember the memories we have made together and use them to make the next part of your life better than the first,” she said.
Student speaker Madelyn Muckenhirn stressed the importance of people pushing themselves to the limits of their full potential. She gave examples of famous people who achieved greatness only by persevering.

Student speaker Madelyn Muckenhirn gives a speech she titled “Push.”

She told of Steve Perry, the lead singer of Journey, who once tried to quit his musical career until his mother convinced him to change his mind.
“If he hadn’t decided to persevere, none of us would have been able to appreciate songs such as ‘Any Way You Want It’ or ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’ because they never would have been created,” she said.
Thomas Edison persevered, too. It took Edison at least 1,000 tries to come up with the light bulb, Muckenhirn said.
“Perseverance is key,” she said. She asked her classmates to learn from their failures and don’t give up.
Downing, a 2011 graduate of Zimmerman High School, attended North Dakota State University in Fargo after high school. There he was on the Bison football team that won back-to-back national championships.
He graduated from NDSU in 2015 with a degree in mathematics education and was excited to be hired as a math teacher at Zimmerman before the 2015-2016 school year.
Downing loves teaching, but it has always been a dream of his to be a pilot in the military and he decided to chase that dream. Downing taught in Zimmerman until January 2017, when he left for officer candidate school in Rhode Island. He was commissioned into the U.S. Navy on April 21 and will move to Florida in July to start flight school.

Downing shared three key points with the Class of 2017:
•Take chances: Take full advantage of all the opportunities that life will present, do everything to the best of your ability and stop worrying about all the things that could go wrong.
•Be prepared to fail: He warned the graduating seniors that they won’t always be good at everything they try. Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper company because he lacked imagination. Sir James Dyson (the vacuum guy) had 5,126 failed prototypes before he created a successful machine and Dr. Seuss’ first book was denied by 27 publishers before being published. How people respond to failure is what makes them who they are, Downing said.
•Respect and love people: “Make a lasting impression on the people that you meet. Show them the best you,” he advised.
The class entered and exited the gymnasium to music by the high school band. The high school choir also sang, performing “The Star Spangled Banner” and “A Blessing.”

Teacher Jim Doran gave the welcome, interim Superintendent Bruce Watkins offered congratulations to the class, Assistant Principal Kurran Sagan presented the class, Elk River Area School Board Member Tony Walter accepted the class, faculty and staff representatives presented the seniors, and members of the Elk River Area School Board conferred the diplomas.
Then, as the ceremony ended, graduates threw their mortarboards into the air in celebration of their achievements.

Mortarboards went flying high into the air of the gymnasium on June 7 at Zimmerman High School at the conclusion of the graduation ceremony.
Interim Superintendent Bruce Watkins gave a speech congratulating the students on their accomplishments.
Zimmerman High School seniors enjoyed a laugh before they officially became graduates of the school.

Special to the Star News
Hassan Elementary School was evacuated Monday, June 5, after an apparent coolant leak in one of the building’s kindergarten classrooms.

The incident occurred around 12:45 p.m. Monday as normal classes were in session. Students were safely evacuated out of the building as a precautionary measure, and the heating and cooling system was shut down.

After an assessment period, the district was given the “all clear” from Rogers emergency personnel to bring students and staff back into Hassan Elementary to resume the school day. Students from the impacted area of the leak were relocated throughout the building.

School staff, with the advisement of state and local officials at the scene, said school could proceed as normal through Thursday, the final day of classes, at Hassan.

Retiring teacher Cheryl Netka thanked the graduates for their persistence.

As the soon-to-be graduates filed in the into Zabee Theater at Elk River High School, excitement of family, friends and teachers filled the room. Once everyone was seated, Ivan Sand juniors and masters of ceremonies Meranda Burton and Ben Wald welcomed the crowd. The duo highlighted the new project-based learning option and Enchanted Forest prom that students participated in this year. They ended their introduction by saying the most important opportunity students had was the space to build unique, meaningful relationships with the staff.

Clarissa Gursky told her class that at the commencement ceremony the people at Ivan Sand set aside differences and problems to celebrate successes.

Six student speakers presented speeches and proved that their common ground was that their road to commencement involved conquering individual struggles. For Frank Holzeau this was coping with the death of his best friend, while for Anna Liashko it was putting in extra time and energy into her studies because Russian is her first language. Achieving goals and putting in necessary work will continue for Holzeau as he begins flight school and for Liashko as she studies finance at Bethel University.

Another speaker, Clarissa Gursky spoke about how thankful she was for the supportive staff at Ivan Sand, her “safe haven” while dealing with anxiety and depression. When Gursky’s conditions worsened and she had to be hospitalized, her gratitude for the community she had at Ivan Sand only grew.

Chloe Miller, one of six student speakers, told the crowd how she made it to graduation day despite being doubted along the way.

“I was sinking so low that I thought I was done for. Even though I had missed a week of school, the staff welcomed me back with open arms,” Gursky explained.

Gursky’s emotional speech left many crowd members teary-eyed. But everyone in attendance cheered as she ended her speech on an optimistic note.

“We will not let our past define us, because the future is ours to create. This isn’t the end, it’s only the beginning,” Gursky said.

Then, before the presentation of the class of 2017, scholarships were awarded. Several students received awards between $500 and $1,000 from local groups, including The Bank of Elk River, Three Rivers Community Foundation and Memorial Blood Center.

Abby Nesbitt was the only student to receive three scholarship awards and was recognized for graduating a year ahead of time.

Ivan Sand staff members lined up Tuesday night to congratulate the new graduates as they received their diplomas at Zabee Theater in Elk River High School.

Retiring English teacher Cheryl Netka was also recognized at Tuesday’s program. Student speaker, Alisha Ecklund dedicated a portion of her speech to “Mrs. Netka.”

She said: “You are by far the most beautifully talented writer I have ever seen. You go beyond limitations and gave me confidence to go for a profession I’d never thought I’d see myself doing,” Ecklund said.

Lastly, Principal Tom Hoffman and School Board Member Joel Nelson presented the diplomas. After the ceremony, students took pictures with their loved ones and guests enjoyed cake and punch in the cafeteria.
