Local high school students have the opportunity to win thousands of dollars in scholarships, a trip to the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention, publication of their piece, as well as dozens of other awards during a patriotic art contest.
Auxiliary President Mary Touve of the Elk River-Rogers VFW Post 5518 recently announced the kickoff of this year’s VFW Auxiliary Creative Patriotic Art Competition.
Students enter by creating a two-dimensional art piece expressing their creative interpretation of patriotism. This contest is open to all students in grades nine through 12. The deadline is March 31.
For middle school students, a statewide program, Patriotic Art Explorers, was founded three years ago by Elk River-Rogers VFW Auxiliary Youth Activities Chair Melody Shryock. This program is open to all students in sixth through eighth grades and operates under the same timeline as the high school scholarship art contest. This middle school competition receives artwork that includes an annual theme. The 2016 the theme is “The Statue of Liberty.”
Interested students, parents and teachers should contact Shryock at 763-712-1873, email at mkshryock@gmail.com or write to VFW Post 5518 at P.O. Box 66, Elk River, Minnesota 55330 for more information.
