Cadets host event

Some of the best high school marching band programs in the state, including Elk River’s, descended on Elk River High School this past weekend for the Winter Guard International Sport of the Arts Event.

River Valley Sound, a winds ensemble composed for 728 Cadets, took first place in the Winds Regional Scholastic Open Class on Feb. 27 at Elk River High School. The 728 Cadets hosted the regional band competition put on by Winter Guard International. There were bands from all over Minnesota performing at the event.

Two dozen percussion ensembles, many representing high schools from across Minnesota, competed in scholastic and independent marching contests.

The event was hosted by the 728 Cadets organization, but it is a regional preliminary event for WGI Sport of The Arts.

The communities of Elk River, Rogers and Zimmerman supplied around 84 volunteers to host the event. WGI also supplied volunteers and staff to make the event possible.

River Valley Sound, a winds ensemble composed of 728 Cadets, took first place in the Winds Regional Scholastic Open Class.

River Valley Percussion Theatre, a percussion ensemble composed of 728 Cadets, took third place in Percussion Regional Scholastic A Class.

Among the other schools represented were Buffalo, Forest Lake, Totino-Grace, Dassel Cokato, St. Francis, South St. Paul, Irondale, Burnsville, Rocori, Rochester Lourdes and Eden Prairie.
